Juniors take a step up

UWA Nedlands FC will have their under 13’s and 14’s boys participate in Division 1 for the 2016 season, after entry into the competition was accepted by Football West earlier this month.

Technical Director, and 14’s coach, Gerhard Janssen believes it is a step in the right direction for the club; however it won’t change the club’s primary emphasis. “UWA Nedlands FC will always be a football club for all levels of skills and commitment,” Janssen explained. “The two teams and their enthusiasm are reflecting the positive atmosphere in the club. However, the philosophy of the club is that first priority must be given to the player’s development. Team success follows consequently.”

Following Football West’s Junior NPL expansion, many Division 1 junior sides were shifted into the expanded NPL. This left vacancies in Division 1 for some Division 2 sides to take the step up. The 13’s and 14’s had their applications accepted following strong performances in 2015.

Janssen believes the movement doesn’t stop here, “Football West encouraged the club to hand in an application for youth NPL 2017. UWAN has the number of players, facilities, the right philosophy and the equality to become an NPL club. It is a target worth working towards as a club.”
