It was to be a disappointing end to a historic Night Series campaign for UWA as they succumbed to a 4-1 loss in the pre-season Final on Saturday night.

Report originally posted by Football West, written by Jayden Lihou.

Fremantle took the lead at Plasterboard Stadium through Sabin Shrestha, before strikes from Wade Farmer and John Hunter put the game almost out of sight.

Mordecai Kuma managed to pull a goal back to give UWA a lifeline but another goal from Shrestha in the 76th minute settled it once and for all.

Fremantle hit the front in first-half injury time when Shrestha was allowed time on the ball before unleashing a shot that found the back of the net despite keeper Carlos Bervenotti getting a touch.

City continued the second half as they ended the first and when Farmer received a through ball at the edge of the box, he finished with a driven shot across goal.

It wasn’t looking good for UWA and it got worse as substitute John Hunter got on the end of a corner for Fremantle’s third.

Kuma gave UWA an outside chance of a fightback two minutes later when he threaded the ball past City keeper Tom Chudy from close range.

However, it was not to be as Shrestha made it 4-1 when he curled the ball into the top corner from distance to secure the first silverware of the season.

UWA coach Michael Janssen acknowledged there was room for improvement before the start of the State League season.

“I think the reason why we lost today was because we didn’t show up and play as well as we usually do,” Janssen said.

“This is the first time in the history of the club that we’ve made it to a final so I’m not completely disappointed in my players; we just had a bad day today and will come back stronger.

“Credit to Fremantle though for winning 4-1, they deserved to win today. But we will see them again on the seventh of April and try to turn things around.”
