UWA Nedlands FC 4 – 1 Hamersley Rovers SC

A superb hattrick from UWA forward Alex Kretowicz has seen UWA through to the next round of the Westfield FFA Cup with a convincing win over Hamersley Rovers SC.

UWA were unable to get going in the early parts of the game. Strong defensive work from the back four ensured Hamerlsey were kept at bay; however, play broke down frequently in the middle of the park. UWA were gifted a few chances from a shaky Hamerlsey back four, but it wasn’t until the 20th minute that UWA made them pay for it. Alex Kretowicz picked up the ball 30 yards from goal and made no mistake rounding the keeper and passing the ball into the net.

The goal sparked some life into the UWA boys and the midfield was finally able to stamp their authority on the game through strong passages of possession from midfield maestro Conor Devlin and Marc Zagami. Five minutes later the boys in green made it 2-0. Good passing from Simon Baah and Andrew Xydas found Alex Kretowicz with another chance to score. His strike was well saved by the Hamersley goalkeeper but it fell straight to the feet of Lloyd Prout, who made no mistakes burying the ball in the open net.

Kretowicz continued to cause mayhem for the Hamersley defence, and before the half was over he would bag his brace and make it three to the good for UWA. He picked the ball up on the left and weaved through several Hamersley players before riffling the ball into the bottom corner from 18 yards. Kretowicz would have a half chance to make it 4-0 in the closing stages of the first half, after he almost headed home an over-hit cross from Tristan Taylor.

The second half begun much more even, with the Hamersley boys providing much more fight. The introduction of Richard Olsen and Ben Reynolds settled the UWA side, but only temporarily as a poor turnover in the UWA defence forced Conor Devlin into fouling on the edge of the box. The resultant free kick was curled into the top corner from Hamerlsey.

UWA were quick to restore their three goal lead, yet again through Alex Kretowicz. Fantastic work down the left flank from Ben Reynolds gave Kretowicz the easiest of finishes to make it 4-1.

The rest of the half saw both sides having several chances; Ben Reyonlds had the pick of the bunch, unable to convert from close on several occasions.

Janssen’s men will progress to the 4th round of the Westfield FFA Cup to be played on Easter Monday the 28th of March. Their opponent will be decided early in the week.
