Carvajal Pleased With Impressive Start

With two wins in their first two league games, UWA Nedlands FC's Women's State League Division One team has started their campaign in the best possible way. Head Coach Antonio Carvajal discusses the squad's impressive start to the season and what he hopes to achieve in 2016.

Last year the women's side was demoted from the Premier League following an extensive period in the top flight; however, the appointment of Carvajal seems to have the squad back on track to return. Carvajal attributes the team's early success down to squad solidarity, "I am pleased to be coaching these girls and success comes due to everyone wanting to play for each other," explained Carvajal. "They are friendly, hardworking and a very supportive group and that will hold them in good stead for the season."

The change in divisions did bring about a large turnaround in personnel, but Carvajal is adamant the squad has what it takes to succeed, "I am very pleased with the squad and I believe that we will do well this season as long as everyone stays focussed on what we want to achieve," he commented. "Hopefully that means promotion back to the Premier League but it is going to be a difficult task. We have a long term vision and this is only the beginning of our journey."

UWA sit on top of the ladder with Wanneroo and will be looking to stay there after their clash with Leeming this weekend. Carvajal believes the squad is in good spirits heading into the clash, "The girls have trained well this week and my expectation is that they will put out a strong performance. If we win against Leeming then it will show that we can match it with a proven contender, as they have been up that end of the table in recent years."

The ladies are also yet to concede in the League, a statistic that reflects a solid unit throughout, "I'm a strong believer that defence begins up front and follows through to our midfield which in turn takes a lot of pressure off the defensive third. All the players are expected to press and win the ball back as quickly as we can."

The Women's team will host Leeming Strikers SC this Sunday the 1st of May at UWA Sports Park.
