Sekhon Confident Going Forward

After a promising start to the season, UWA goalkeeper Ranjeet Sekhon expects the squad to take their performance to the next level and collect all three points when they face Shamrock Rovers in Round 4 of the All Flags State League Division One this weekend.

UWA’s last two outings has seen them draw to both Rockingham City and Western Knights, two games that Sekhon believes they could’ve won, “It was a bit disappointing to draw both games,” Sekhon explains. “We stamped our dominance with control of possession for the majority of both games. Unfortunately small mistakes cost us, both draws were not bad results but I certainly think we deserved wins from these games.”

Sekhon accredits the team’s performances down to the coaching of Janssen, who he believes can take the club to the next level. “I love the style he (Janssen) has us playing. Playing it out from the back with flowing football. It keeps me more involved with the game and the defensive unit.”

Despite not playing for UWA last season, Sekhon believes the squad is in much better shape then the last time he fielded for UWA in 2014. “The difference in the squad this year is the high number of local players who want to play for the club," commented Sekhon. “In the past we have had older players and a few overseas lads who tend to leave the club for the attraction of money, which makes it hard to build a playing style and a squad. I think Michael and Gerhard (Janssen) have done a great job with the recruiting.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s game with Shamrock, Sekhon knows it’ll be a tough task but fully expects to pick up UWA’s first win of the season. “Shamrock is always a difficult team to play against. If we continue to play to the level we have been in the last few weeks then I think we will come away with the win.”

UWA will host Shamrock Rovers FC this Saturday the 30th of April at UWA Sports Park.
