In case you missed it... Our State League 2 Women are 2019 Champions!
This past Sunday September 29th UWANFC’s Women’s State League 2 Team travelled south for their match against Perth AFC.
The winner in Coolbellup would decide the SL2 Championship. The two teams only prior meeting in July resulted in a 0-0 draw. The only time UWA has been held scoreless in the past 3 seasons.
Despite 29 degree heat UWA was immediately dangerous. Within minutes our Ladies created a few excellent goal line opportunities with Jo Westerhout’s hard work only thwarted by an impressive save from the Perth AFC Keeper.
UWA continued to apply pressure throughout the half. Our defensive bulwark of Georgie Teakle, Lucy Butler, Emma Priestly-Swinscoe, Sarah Couche, and GK Naomi Herron easily defused all counter-attacks.
Despite owning the run-of-play Perth managed to score directly off a beautifully executed corner kick with only minutes remaining in the half. 0-1
Trailing to start the 2nd half our UWANFC Ladies remained composed and had fun taking the fight to the Perth defence. At the 55 minute mark Georgie Teakle delivered a perfectly weighted corner kick into the box which was hammered into the back of the net by a flying Franca Dobbin header. 1-1
UWA continued to press the attack with numerous attempts against an organized Perth defence. Our platoon of talented midfielders; Amber Hewton, Lucy Grey, Ana Gannett, Vaanitha Manickavasagar, Kelsey Lang, Franca Dobbin, Tia Evers and Dana Crier rotated rolls flawlessly. They bravely controlled the pitch by winning the majority of challenges and keeping their shape while serving the attack.
The 76 minute mark saw Dana Crier win a devastating challenge only to deliver a perfect service to Brigitte Morgan who blew up two defenders and the keeper to slot the game winner (and her league leading 25th goal) into the far corner of the rigging.
Final Score: Perth AFC 1 – 2 UWANFC
